
Why Your IR Lamps Are Either Saving Your Day or Killing Your Batch
Annealing glass bottles is basically a high-stakes game of temperature. You’re running batches through a lehr or a tunnel furnace, and everything depends on the heat being exactly the same everywhere. But here’s the problem: if one lamp is acting up, you get “cold spots.” It sounds minor, but it’s a nightmare. Those spots leave internal stress trapped in the glass. Then, long after the bottles have left your line, they just… pop. Spontaneous breakage. Not a great look for quality control.
The headache of “wattage drift”
Most of the time, when a batch goes sideways, it’s because the lamps are wearing out or the wattage is drifting. Imagine a bank of lamps where one is putting out 10% less energy than the one next to it. Your temperature profile is now crooked. To fix this, we obsess over the tiny details—things like how the filament is wound and the purity of the quartz. When your infrared lamps are consistent, every single tube in that furnace hits with the same punch. You stop spending your whole shift tweaking zone controllers just to make up for a few “weak” lamps. It just works.
Handling the heat
If you’re trying to get a deep heat soak in a shorter tunnel, you probably use high-wattage shortwave IR. It’s powerful. Really powerful. But that kind of energy puts a lot of stress on your sockets and wiring. You’ve got to make sure your electrical setup can actually handle the current, otherwise, you’re looking at overheating terminals. We also use reinforced quartz envelopes. Why? Because at these temperatures, tubes can actually bow. Once a tube bends, the heat doesn’t hit where it’s supposed to, and you’re right back to square one with uneven heating.
The real cost
Now, let’s be honest. Lamps with tighter tolerances cost more upfront. You’re paying for the extra work we do to sort and bin the lamps by their exact output. But think about the alternative. It’s a lot cheaper to buy a premium lamp than it is to scrap an entire batch of bottles because the heat wasn’t uniform. It’s basically insurance for your production line.
