
Why We Build Mirror Heaters to be Swappable
Most people install a bathroom mirror heater and then completely forget it exists. That’s fine—until it stops working. See, bathrooms are brutal on electronics. Between the constant steam and the heating elements expanding and contracting every single morning, things eventually wear out. Usually, after about five years, a tube burns out. If your heater is glued in or hard-wired, you’re stuck. You have to rip out the entire unit just because one tiny part quit on you. That sounds like a nightmare. So, we do things differently.
The “Swap it Out” Approach
We use a modular infrared setup. Instead of one giant, permanent heating block, we use independent quartz or halogen tubes held in place by brackets. Here is why that matters: if a 100W section dies, you don’t have to toss a 500W system in the trash. You just pull the dead tube out and drop a new one in. It’s a quick fix, not a renovation project.
No Soldering, No Stress
To make this actually easy, we ditched the permanent solder joints. Those are a pain to deal with. Instead, we use standard plug-and-play connectors. When it’s time for a tune-up, you just unplug the lead, slide the tube out of the reflector, and click the new one in. It takes a few minutes. Now, to be honest, this takes up a bit more room inside the mirror chassis than a flat strip would. But in my book, losing a little bit of internal space is a fair trade for not having to replace your entire mirror every few years.
The Honest Trade-offs
Nothing is perfect. By adding more plugs, you’re adding more spots where something could go wrong if a connection isn’t seated right. That’s why we use connectors specifically rated for the mirror’s wattage. It keeps things safe and prevents any nasty arcing. One last tip: if you’re running a high-wattage system for a massive mirror, just make sure your wiring is thick enough to handle the load. And give the modules some breathing room. A bit of ventilation keeps the plastic brackets from warping over time, ensuring everything stays snug for years to come.
