Most infrared lamps just blast a wide range of heat. For a lot of jobs, that’s fine. But if you’re working with specialty glass additives, a “one size fits all” approach is basically just wasting electricity. Here’s the problem: some additives only “listen” to very specific wavelengths of heat. If your lamp isn’t hitting those exact notes, the heat just bounces off the surface. It never actually gets inside the glass.
Tuning the Curve
We fix this by messing with the filament and adding specific quartz coatings to the lamps. Basically, we shift the emission curve so the lamp’s peak output lines up perfectly with the chemistry of your glass. Instead of just cranking up the power and hoping for the best, you get heat that actually penetrates deep into the material. But don’t let that fool you. Your actual heating rate—per millimeter of glass depth—is going to go up. Just a heads-up: you’ll need to tweak your PID controllers. The glass responds differently when it’s absorbing heat throughout its volume rather than just getting scorched on the surface.
