
Stop Heating the Air: A Better Way to Finish Glass
Let’s be honest—glass annealing is usually the biggest energy hog in the entire finishing line. Most shops are still using old-school resistive heating, which basically means you’re paying to heat up all the air in the room just to get the glass to the right temperature. It’s a waste. We do things differently. We use short-wave infrared (IR) lamps. Instead of warming the air, these lamps go straight for the glass.
The Power Stuff
Our IR lamps pack a lot of punch into a small space. Because they handle high voltage, they can punch through thick glass without needing a massive, cavernous oven. You can pick the wattage based on how fast your conveyor moves or how long your tunnel is. Higher wattage means you hit your target temp faster. Just a heads-up, though: these things gethot. Really hot. Make sure your oven’s vents and cooling systems can handle the heat, or you’ll be replacing components way sooner than you’d like.
Built to Last, Easy to Fix
We use high-purity quartz for the tubes so the IR light actually gets through. Inside, there’s a tungsten filament with a halogen cycle. In plain English? The tubes don’t turn black over time. They stay bright and steady for thousands of hours. And we didn’t make the installation a nightmare. We use standard industrial connectors (like R7s or SK15). They’re basically drop-in replacements. If a tube burns out, your maintenance person can swap it in a few minutes and get the line moving again without having to rewire the whole rack.
What This Does for Your Wallet
The best part is the “warm-up” time. Or rather, the lack of it. Traditional ovens take forever to get the whole chamber up to temp before the first piece of glass even enters. Our lamps just target the workpiece. That means you’re using fewer kWh per unit. Plus, you get way more control over the heat, which means fewer pieces ending up in the scrap bin because of internal stress. You’re putting more power into the glass, but you’re spending a lot less on your annual energy bill.
