
Why Shortwave IR is the Secret to a Warm Changing Room
Ever stepped out of a shower into a bathroom that feels like a walk-in freezer? It’s the worst. Most people try to fix this with standard convection heaters, but those things are basically useless in open-concept bathrooms or drafty changing zones. Why? Because they waste all their energy trying to heat the air. And in a room with a draft, that warm air just vanishes the second it hits a breeze. That’s why we use shortwave infrared (IR). Instead of fighting the air, these heaters go straight for the target: you. It’s like stepping into a beam of sunlight on a crisp October morning. You feel the heat on your skin almost instantly. The magic of “instant” Some heating systems take forever to warm up. Not these. Shortwave IR lamps hit their peak temperature the second you flip the switch. We tune these units to a specific wavelength (between 0.76 and 1.4 microns) so the heat actually penetrates the skin. When we mount these in a wall chassis, it creates a concentrated “warm zone.” You don’t have to waste money heating every cubic inch of the room—just the spot where you’re actually standing and getting dressed. The nitty-gritty on the hardware To make this work, we use tungsten filaments inside quartz glass. But since bathrooms are basically steam rooms, we can’t just throw a lamp on the wall. The housing has to be IP-rated, or the humidity will wreck the electrical terminals pretty quickly. There is a bit of a balancing act with the wattage and your ceiling height. A high-wattage element throws a more intense beam of heat, which is great, but if it’s too low, it’ll actually burn you. We always suggest keeping a clearance of at least 2.1 meters. A few things to watch out for Here’s the catch: these units pull a lot of power the moment they kick in. You can’t just plug one of these into a regular 10A wall outlet and hope for the best. You’ll likely trip the breaker right in the middle of your morning routine. You need dedicated wiring and a breaker that can actually handle the load. And be careful not to overdo it. If you put too much wattage in a tiny space, it stops feeling like a cozy sanctuary and starts feeling like an oven. The trick is to calculate the wattage based on your actual square footage. Get it right, and you’ll never dread the “post-shower chill” again.
