
Stop Your Glass From Shattering: The Secret to Better Tempering
Anyone who’s worked with glass knows that feeling of dread when you hear that sharp crack in the tempering line. It’s frustrating. Usually, it happens because the glass can’t handle the sudden jump in temperature—what we call thermal shock. To stop that from happening, we use gold-coated shortwave infrared emitters. I know, “gold-coated” sounds fancy, but there’s a very practical reason for it.
Why the gold actually matters
Standard quartz lamps throw out a wide mix of radiation. By adding a thin layer of gold to the quartz, we basically tell the longer-wave radiation to turn around and go back into the filament. This does two things. First, it pushes more heat forward. Second, it shifts everything toward the shortwave spectrum. Here is the real win: shortwave IR doesn’t just sit on the surface of the glass; it sinks deep into the core. When the inside and the outside heat up at the same speed, you don’t get those nasty temperature gaps that cause the glass to stress and snap.
Speed is everything
Thermal shock is basically a race. If the surface gets way hotter than the center, the glass loses. That’s why we use these specific emitters. They have very little “thermal mass,” meaning they don’t hold onto heat like a heavy brick. They don’t lag. You can crank the power up or kill it in a matter of milliseconds. It gives you total control. The moment your system sees the glass hit a critical temperature, you can trim the heat instantly. No waiting around for a heating element to cool down while your product is already cracking.
A few things to watch out for
Now, this much power isn’t without its quirks. Because the gold coating concentrates heat so intensely, you have to be careful. If your lamps are too close together or your conveyor is crawling too slowly, you’ll end up with “hot spots.” You’ll also want to make sure your PID controllers are tuned for that fast response time. If the controller is sluggish, the lamp’s speed doesn’t matter. And one last thing—keep your reflectors clean. Seriously. A little bit of dust on those mirrors will eat your efficiency alive. Keep them sparkling, and the gold emitters will do the heavy lifting for you.
